Nouakchott

The Autonomous Port of Nouakchott, PANPA for short, is located near the West African Atlantic coast and offers competitive storage facilities and warehousing tariffs. PANPA welcomes 60 vessels corresponding to 6000 TEUS (20’Containers) per annum. 40,000 tons are handled by liners vessels and 80,000 tons by charters every year.
Nouakchott port is an import port representing approximately 96.4% of all annual traffic. Imported goods include oilfield materials,wheat, cement, clinker, flour, sugar, semolina, milk and general equipment. Exports include plaster, animal skins and fish


Nouadhibou

Formerly known as Port-Etienne, this port is located in the North of the country, close to the borders of Morocco. The economical base is fishing and fish-processing, but also exportation of iron that is transported with the railways from central Mauritania.

A. GENERALITIES:

DENOMINATION: Nouakchott Port authority so called " Port of friendship ".
 

LEGAL STATUS: Autonomous Port

GEOGRAHPICAL LOCATION: Port Quay (Lighthouse)

- Longitude 16D 01' 35" West
WARF QUAY:
- Latitude 18D 02' 08" North
- Longitude 16D 01' 43" West

TIDE DIFFERENCES:
- High: 1,69 m
- Low: 0,25 m
- Range: 1,44 m
CURRENT:

Quasi permanent North-South of 0,5 knot, it reverses from South-North some days during year
CAPACITY:

The capacity of the port is about 1,5 millions tones a year
PORT SERVICES:

Piloting: ensured by the Port and is compulsory
Towage: ensured by the Port and is compulsory
Handling:
- On board: ensured by private companies
- Ashore: ensured by the Port nearing to be given to private companies
Security: ensured by a Gendarme company and Port guards.


B. PRESENTATION OF "PORT FRIENDSHIP" QUAY

LOCATION: The Port Quay is located at 5 Km on south of the quay of Wharf at 15 Km south southwest from Nouakchott. WATER PLAN: Channel width 150 meters, diameter of swinging circle is 400 m entirely marked on with beacons. This plan is protected.
DRAFT: 9 to 10,3 meters

a) Lighthouse: Geographical location

- Latitude 17D 59' 40" North
- Longitude 16D 01' 35" West
This lighthouse is visible far from 16 nautical miles or 29,6 Kilometres.

b) Light Pier head: Location
- Latitude 17D 59' 18" North
- Longitude 16D 02' 23" West
Located in the extreme Southwest of the pier, it shows the entrance of the dock during the night.

c) Beacons

2 beacons, one is located on the South of Port and the other is at the costal Sand hill. It shows the channel line providing to the ships to follow it by night.

- Back beacon: +22 m

d) Light buoys

3 light buoys:
- One is at the entrance of the channel 3 Km on the entrance of Dock showing the channel head.
- One in the West limit of Dock
- One in the North limit of dock
QUAY:

Linear Berths measuring 585 m divided as follows:
- Berth I = 9 m hydro
- Berth II = 9.80 m hydro
- Berth III = 10.30 m hydro
- Basin = 10.60 m hydro
This quay of 45,6 m of wide on steel pile with a large diameter is used in earth facilities by a bridge of 732,5 m wide fitted on steel pile.
The protecting pier for 810 m long shelters the quay and a part of the bridge making a calm water plan. The steel piers are protected against corrosion by cathode system.
